I arrived in Australia as a 6 year old from Italy. As was the custom, I wore a small pair of gold cerchietti earrings. The earrings were not an issue in Primary School, but when I started high school at OLMC, Epping, I was told that they had to come off. I can tell you my mum was not pleased, but she was not one to give up easily. She had to come up with a solution that would appease the nuns as well as keep the holes in my ears from closing. Something most would think impossible, including myself at the time. She opened the kitchen cupboard and out came the dried oregano. I watched in wonder as she broke off a small twig fine enough to go comfortably through the hole in my ears that rendered it almost invisible. The oregano was a herb, therefore was harmless and did the trick. My mum was a creative genius! Problem solved!

Why am I telling you this? Well, a new year is always a good time to make plans and step up our goals according to what we want to achieve during the next twelve months. Though your Personal Year Cycle changes from birthday to birthday and its directive number is your personal guide, it’s also important to consider the calendar year and its directive, because this number affects the world, which includes you.

2019 is governed by the number 3, and is creative in its nature, its opportunities and expectations. So, when something happens to you that you consider a problem or a challenge, your best response is a creative one. Do express how much you don’t like it, but after that you will need to settle down and come up with a solution that is best for all concerned. My mum expressed her dislike that my school did not allow me to keep wearing my earrings, and she did that within our family. She did not retaliate with any force. Nor did she consider herself, or respond as a victim. She did something far, far better, and in so doing taught me a valuable lesson which I hold dear to this very day. She created a solution that was acceptable to all concerned. This is what problem solving is – creative thinking! But don’t be fooled into thinking that this should be kept only for big challenges, use creative problem solving for life’s everyday little hiccups. When something stops you, stop only long enough to create the best possible response… with the emphasis on the best possible. That’s all Life ever asks of us.

I’d like to encourage you to tackle and respond to all that 2019 brings you – creatively. Create the best responses you can come up with for all your challenges. Create the best responses you can come up with for all your opportunities… and allow the best possible results to come to you.

Your mum was a smart lady. I don’t understand though, why you couldn’t wear them. Were they jealous? We had similar rules at my public school. The gold bangle was the offending item I wore. I remember that my mother said don’t wear it to school. Still today do not understand their reasoning about this kind of thing. They needed to be modelling acceptance rather than the opposite. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

The school’s reaction was nothing sinister Anna. It was a good school with very strict rules, as most were in the 60’s and some are today even. My point in sharing was to showcase how our creative thinking can problem solve even small everyday challenges such as this was. HAPPY 2019!
